The Indiana State Soldiers and Sailors Monument stands in the center of Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis. It was dedicated on May 15, 1902, and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. An elevator and stairway containing 331 steps provide access to the monument’s observation deck from the base of its interior.
In the early 1990s, a campaign was launched to raise funds to repair and refurbish some of the interior elements. For cash contributions, individuals and organizations could “purchase” steps in the monument, and the gift was evidenced by a plaque placed on the step.
While we have been unable to identify the donor, Step 304 (pictured) was purchased to honor The Society of Indiana Pioneers. Take a look the next time you are in downtown Indy. You will be relieved to know they begin numbering with number 1 at the top!
