The Pioneers plan to explore the migration of our ancestors with a compelling, four day trip along the historic National Road. The Pilgrimage will be Aug. 1-4, 2022, with stops at historic sites in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Maryland after a departure from Indianapolis. Availability remains for members and guests to participate on the tour, which will follow up the success of the 2019 Pilgrimage to the Cumberland Gap.

A brand new event is planned for June 29, 2022. An inaugural Intergenerational Day designed to captivate young generations of Pioneers (children and grandchildren of members) will unfold at Kotweei Park in the Strawtown area of Noblesville, IN. All ages are welcome at the park’s Center of Natural History. A flier with details about the Intergenerational Day, including a reservation form, will be included in a mailing to Pioneers in late January.

Hoosier Heritage Fall Pilgrimage 2021

Whitewater River Area of Eastern Indiana & Governor Morton House

Saturday, September 11, 2021

After one year of not traveling because of the Covid pandemic, nearly forty Pioneers enjoyed a Fall Pilgrimage to historic sites along the National Road in eastern Indiana during a trip that culminated with a Civil War-era dinner at a house once owned by one of the most consequential governors in Hoosier history. The pilgrimage unfolded on a day of glorious weather – Sept. 11 was a sunny Saturday – after being rescheduled twice because of public health concerns during the pandemic.

Cumberland Gap: Retracing Our Ancestors’ Journey

Kentucky, Virginia & Tennessee

July 25-28, 2019

In a departure from more than a decade of one- or two-day trips, the Pioneers in 2019 embarked on a four-day (three-night) Pilgrimage. Also in contrast to previous years, which have featured both Spring and Fall Pilgrimages, the special trip from July 25-28 was the only one of the year. The journey was an expedition to see where and how many Pioneers’ ancestors got to the Hoosier frontier by visiting the Cumberland Gap, the pass through the Cumberland Mountains near the junction of Kentucky, Virginia and Tennessee. En route to the gap and during the return trip, forty-seven Pioneers and our guests visited several historic sites in Kentucky.
